For the first time in the UAE, a federal road will be paved with ‘rubber asphalt’ – a concrete material mixed with rubber from recycled tyres – the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has said.

Aisha Al Midfaa, assistant undersecretary for the ministry’s planning sector, said the new mixture would be used in a federal road in the country starting next week and for a two-month period.

“The team will try a mix of asphalt and recycled rubber in paving the road and, based on the result, the same mixture might be used on other infrastructure projects,” Al Midfaa said.

It’s a pioneering scheme that falls in line with the ministry’s efforts to find eco-friendly solutions and adopt sustainable practices in building infrastructure across the country, she said.

“Using this green technology for environment-friendly roads will result in a decrease in waste, harmful carbon emissions and noise pollution,” Al Midfaa said.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with Michelin Rubber Company, she added.
